Vancouver, WA is Saying Goodbye to The ClipArt Flag Design…Finally!

Vancouver is raising the bar…after over thirty years of waving around a flag that looks like it was designed on Windows 95 ClipArt (see below):

Now, the City has narrowed down six finalists in its quest for a new banner worthy of flying at our City Hall.

The Vancouver Flag Committee sifted through 138 submissions to find designs that didn’t break every rule in Good Flag, Bad Flag. (Fun fact: a “bad flag” is one with text on it, which is exactly what our current flag has…)

The finalists came from designers Brooke Nugent, Jacob Strain, Nathan Hunter, and Brian Richards. Two of the final flag designs are mashups, because apparently flag design can be remixed?!

Flag Design #1: Brooke Nugent

Flag Design #2: Jacob Strain

Flag Design #3: Nathan Hunter

Flag Design #4: Brooke Nugent and Nathan Hunter

Flag Design #5: Brian Richards

Flag Design #6: Brian Richards and Nathan Hunter

Now, here’s where you come in. The City has opened a public feedback portal through October 9th. Before you get too excited, this isn’t an actual vote…you just leave your opinions so the committee can “reflect” on them before making its final recommendation.

The stakes are high: the winning design gets a key to the City and a flag-raising ceremony. Plus, you know, this will be our new City flag for, like, the rest of time or something. No big deal.

So take a look at the six finalists, and submit your thoughts about which one should be raised up the flag pole.
